Guide to the Westminster Press Book Illustrations
The Westminster Press is the official trade name for the publishing activities of the Presbyterian Church. Founded in 1833, the function of the press is to publish church school teaching materials, religious fiction and non-fiction and literature for youth.
Record Group 158 contains artwork (over 1500 illustrations) by twenty-four artists for forty-five books published between 1947 and 1970. Although some post-1958 UPCUSA records are included (1958-1965), the bulk of the collection consists of pre-1958 PCUSA materials. Generally, the illustrations and corresponding texts are non-secular in nature. An added benefit of the entire collection is that it enables one to view the varied stages of the publication process.
The collection is arranged alphabetically by artist and title of the book.
Each illustration in this collection was assigned a number within its folder--the "Item #" column on the folder list shows the number of illustrations within each folder. An asterisk in the "Folder" column means that the items on that line were too large to be placed in folders--they are loose in the boxes.
At first glance, the numbers on the folders will not appear to match those in the finding aid. An overly complex system devised by the processor of the collection has been simplified for ease in reading the finding aid and retrieving materials. Her item #15811.1 has been broken into its parts of RG 158, Box 1, Folder 1, item 1.
The researcher will notice that in addition to Box 9, there is a Box 9A, as well as a Box 12 and six other "A" boxes. These are large flat boxes in which are stored items which were too large for their original boxes.
Some oversize items are housed in the map case. These are listed at the end of the finding aid with their map case numbers, which are to be used when requesting materials.
