Administrative History
As part of its general reorganization of 1960, the Board of Christian Education created a General Division of Vocation and Ministry. This division was largely related to the idea of recruitment; it was to find those young people with vocations and encourage and assist them to enter the Presbyterian ministry. One office of the new division, that of Educational Loans and Scholarships, was responsible for financial encouragement and assistance of these would-be ministers. It awarded scholarships to outstanding young United Presbyterians planning to attend a college related to the Church. Loans were available to college and seminary students who decided to become ministers. Similar fellowships were given to graduate students who were potential college or seminary teachers or board and agency staff members. Additional scholarships and loans were provided to church vocations candidates.
Record Group 100 includes, minutes, correspondence and reports from the Office of Educational Loans and Scholarships and from various loan, grant and scholarship programs with which it worked. The bulk of the records dates from 1960-73, although there are some older items.
