The Home Missions Council of North America was the "the interdenominational home missions agency, organized by the home mission boards of twenty-three denominations for conference, consultation, coordination of denominational home mission work, and cooperative action and work." The Council was the result of a merger in 1940 of the Home Missions Council and the Council of Women for Home Missions.
The Home Missions Council was organized on March 6, 1908 "to promote fellowship, conference, and co-operation among Christian organizations doing missionary work in the United States and its dependencies." The Council of Women for Home Missions was formed in November 1908 "to unify the efforts of the national women's home mission boards of the United States and Canada by consultation and cooperation in action and to represent Protestant church women in such national movements as they desire to promote inter-denominationally."
The Home Missions Council of North America provided service in two ways. It allowed "board representatives to meet in committees for coordination of programs and consideration of common problems," and it administered projects on an interdenominational basis when so requested by the mission boards. The activities of the Council were carried out through a number of committees. These included the Committee on Alaska, City and Bi-Lingual Work Committee, West Indies Committee, Cooperation in Intermountain Area Committee, Christian Approach to the Jews Committee, Work Among Japanese and Japanese Americans Committee, Church Building Committee, Bureau of Architecture, Comity and Cooperation Committee, Missionary Personnel Committee, Policy Committee, Promotion and Publicity Committee, Youth and Student Work Committee, Migrant Committee, Sharecroppers Committee, and Indian Work Committee.
The Home Missions Council, the Council of Women for Home Missions, and the Home Missions Council of North America were served by a number of executive secretaries during their existence. Executive secretaries of the Home Missions Council included Alfred W. Anthony, 1918-1923; Charles E. Vermilya, 1924-1927; William R. King, 1927-1937; and Mark A. Dawber, 1937-1940. Executive secretaries of the Council of Women for Home Missions were Florence E. Quinlan, 1919-1931; Anne E. Seesholtz, 1932-1936; and Edith E. Lowry, 1936-1940. Executive secretaries of the Home Missions Council of North America included Edith E. Lowry, 1940-1950; Mark A. Dawber, 1940-1949; and I. George Nace, 1950.
In 1950 the Home Missions Council of North America joined the National Council of Churches where its activities were assumed by the Division of Home Missions.
The Home Missions Council of North America, 1903-1951, files date primarily from 1920 to 1950. The papers are principally those of the executive secretaries, Mark A. Dawber and Edith E. Lowry. There are also papers of William R. King, Anne E. Seesholtz, and I. George Nace. In addition, there are papers of Merle Gripman, assistant treasurer, and Don F. Pielstick, who was field representative from 1944 to 1949 and associate secretary in 1950.
The files are arranged alphabetically by subject, name of organization, name of individual, and geographic location. Items within the files are arranged chronologically by year, month, and day. Partially dated documents are placed at the end of the month or year; undated items are placed after all dated material. Enclosures are placed after their letter of transmittal. Newspaper clippings, unless enclosed with correspondence, are placed at the end of subject files.
The files consist of incoming and outgoing correspondence, memoranda, minutes, agenda, reports, speeches, constitutions, bylaws, budgets, financial statements, press releases, surveys, articles, poems, plays, newsletters, stamps, maps, reprints, programs, pamphlets, leaflets, broadsides, and newspaper clippings. It should be noted that carbons of outgoing correspondence are often typed on the reverse side of the incoming correspondence which they refer to.
The files include material from the two predecessors of the Council -- the Home Missions Council and the Council of Women for Home Missions. The files detail the activities of the various committees of the Council such as Alaska, Indian Work, Negro Work, Town and Country, Sharecropper Work, West Indies, and Youth and Student Work. The material concerns a wide range of subjects including camp and defense communities, government projects, state interdenominational agencies, World Day of Prayer, Spanish-speaking people, and the urban church.
The largest group of files concerns the Council's work with migrant laborers. The extensive material consists of correspondence, field reports, minutes, financial statements, and printed matter. Much of this material is arranged by state. Printed copies of the Council's annual reports and proceedings of annual meetings for the period, 1912-1950, may be found with the bound volumes.

The archives of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America were processed in 1980-1984 through two grants awarded to the Presbyterian Historical Society by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Work under the first grant was performed by Dr. Alan Thomson and under the second grant by Donald L. Haggerty.
The archives of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America have been dated from 1950 to 1972; however, there is material dating from before and after this time period. Documents from the predecessor organizations date from as early as 1839. There is also a small amount of material found in the files from as late as 1975. The year 1972 was selected as a cutoff date for the archives because of the major reorganization which the NCC underwent at this time. The archives are arranged in the following record groups:
