Meeting Jesus: April 12 Judas

Wednesday of Holy Week

Read John 12:4-8

I’ve followed that fatherless rabbi for three years. I’ve lost count of my hungry stomachs, blistered feet, and bouts of seasickness. I’ve put up with lepers, prostitutes, cripples, and Samaritans — all in vain hope that this imbecile would deliver Israel. Who was I kidding? Jesus rescuing our nation is as laughable as a puppy commanding a battalion.

And now he has disgraced me. Lazarus’ sister showed her true colors tonight, squandering a year’s wages and what’s left of her reputation anointing his feet. His feet! When I tried to uphold his honor, that ingrate brought me up short in front of the entire room. Enough!

So I negotiated with the Sanhedrin. It’s time Jesus realizes he’s not God’s gift to humanity. They offered 30 pieces of silver. I took it thinking, how appropriate. He’s always talking so highly of service — it’s fitting that he brings the price of a slave.

Jesus, forgive us, both for what we have done and what we have left undone.
