Meeting Jesus: March 30 Woman Healed of a Crippling Disease

Thursday of the Fourth Sunday in Lent

Read Luke 13:10–17

Slowly, awkwardly, I entered the synagogue. Each Sabbath, my back seemed a little more crooked, and the pain seemed a little more intense. I’d have given my eyeteeth for a little relief, but this seemed to be my lot in life.

Today I noticed a new rabbi joining our ranks. He called to me, and I hobbled over to him. He placed his hands on my hunched shoulders and told me I was freed. For the first time in 18 years, I felt my muscles release. For the first time in 18 years, I could look another person in the eyes.

Of all the reactions my synagogue’s leaders might have had, they chose to berate this man for healing me on the Sabbath. I’m restored after two decades, and they default to legalism. It’s no matter, though — I choose to rejoice in God’s blessing.

Jesus, release us from the bonds that hinder us, be they physical or spiritual.
