First Sunday in Lent
Read Luke 2:40–52
As the masses departed from Passover observances, one of my fellow scribes discovered a 12-year-old wandering around the colonnade. His parents were nowhere to be found, but he in no manner seemed frightened or lost. That was curious and disconcerting, to say the least. Presuming his parents would return eventually, we returned to our Torah discussion. I noticed how intently he attended us; his parents had obviously seen to his religious instruction. We allowed him to listen in, thinking it might be beneficial for him to see how the scholars operate. Then he began asking us questions—and we could scarcely believe our ears. This gawky youngster, not even through puberty, revealed a depth of insight it took us decades to attain. Who is this child, and how does he have such wisdom?
Prayer: Jesus, bestow upon us your wisdom and insight, and help us to be as amazed as those who first experienced them.
