“Engaging Faithfully in a Changing World”: Reaffirming and Revisiting the Divestment Strategy of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

The “Divestment Strategy: The Ethical and Institutional Context” was approved by the 196th General Assembly (1984). For decades, this policy guided the PC(USA)’s divestment process.  The 226th General Assembly (2024) approved the creation of a Task Force to review the “Divestment Strategy” and to recommend changes if needed to reflect changes in the investing world and PC(USA) social witness policy since 1984. The 227^th General Assembly (2026) approved the task force’s recommended changes and its affirmation of the original 1984 policy. Below is the narrative report and rationale for the Task Force’s changes, followed by the final text of criteria to be followed in implementing divestment. The original 1984 policy follows as an appendix.
