Waymarks
The Journal of Presbyterian History is now Waymarks: Presbyterian and Reformed History for Today. The title change marks a new era for this Presbyterian Historical Society publication. Waymarks is public-facing—reaching beyond the academy to engage pastors, churchgoers, and anyone interested in the many connections between faith and social, political, and cultural currents past and present. Each issue will include one longer-form, beautifully illustrated historical article along with shorter pieces and book reviews that we hope readers will find interesting and relatable to contemporary questions facing church and society.
Current Issue, Spring/Summer 2026
This inaugural issue of Waymarks profiles six individuals whose lives speak to the memory project that is “America 250”: John Witherspoon, Barton Stone, Francis Grimké, Ida B. Wells Barnett, Esther Pak, and Janie Spahr. It also includes an article exploring the push-pull question of agency in the departure of Black members from majority white congregations in Washington, D.C. during the 1840s and the founding of Fifteenth Street Presbyterian Church.
The Waymarks’ editors welcome submissions of academic articles and short think pieces and commentaries.
Individuals and Congregations can subscribe to Waymarks for $48 per year to receive two issues annually. Use the webform below to subscribe. After submitting the form, you will be directed to make a payment with a credit card (all major credit cards are accepted).
*Supporters of the Presbyterian Historical Society who donate $100 or more annually will receive a free subscription to Waymarks for that year.
