Jesus said to them, ‘They need not go away; you give them something to eat.’ – Matthew 14:16

Five loaves and two fish,

the final tally from a quick survey,

not enough for so many people,

the disciples firmly say.

Five loaves and two fish,

it’s best to send the crowd away,

let them find their own supper

and come back another day.

Five loaves and two fish,

carefully guarded, tucked away,

but Jesus says to bring them out

and the disciples dare not disobey.

Five loaves and two fish,

scarcity is no reason to dismay

when selfishness is the epidemic

that God’s covenant often betrays.

Five loaves and two fish,

cry deficit-dealers even today,

but amassing more is not the solution

to apathy-induced moral decay.

Five loaves and two fish,

come, Lord Jesus, break bread, we pray,

we need a miracle of sharing,

teach us your generosity to display.

por Magdalena I. García
