A resource for Sunday’s liturgy based on Matthew 2:13-23

“Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” – Matthew 2:13b
“Get up and flee...”
Joseph hears God’s angel
speak the same words twice,
so he gives up country
to seek refuge in a foreign land.
“Get up and flee...”
Cuban families hear God’s angel
speak the same words,
so we give up status
to seek freedom in a foreign land.
“Get up and flee...”
Hispanic/Latino families hear God’s angel
speak the same words,
so they give up community
to seek sustenance in a foreign land.
“Get up and flee...”
Syrian families hear God’s angel
speak the same words,
so they give up identity
to seek survival in a foreign land.
And those of us who inhabit
in a coveted foreign land
must resist the urge to question or judge,
heeding instead the message
that God’s angel has for us:
“Get up and serve...”

José oye al ángel de Dios
pronunciar estas palabras dos veces,
así que él renuncia a su país
para buscar refugio en tierra extranjera.
“Levántate y huye...”
Las familias cubanas oyen al ángel de Dios
pronunciar estas mismas palabras,
así que renuncian a su posición
para buscar libertad en tierra extranjera.
“Levántate y huye...”
Las familias hispanas oyen al ángel de Dios
pronunciar estas mismas palabras,
así que renuncian a su comunidad
para buscar sostenimiento en tierra extranjera.
“Levántate y huye...”
Las familias sirias oyen al ángel de Dios
pronunciar estas mismas palabras,
así que renuncian a su identidad
para buscar sobrevivencia en tierra extranjera.
Y quienes habitamos
en una codiciada tierra extranjera
debemos resistir el impulso de cuestionar o juzgar,
prestando en cambio atención al mensaje
que el ángel de Dios tiene para nosotros y nosotras:
“Levántate y sirve...”
