Love God, love the ‘hood

Six hundred and thirteen commandments
that apply to all of life
one for each day of the solar year
and one for each bone in the human body
some negative and others positive
365 don’ts and 248 do’s
were wisely summed up by Jesus
into just two short precepts
like a pocket version
of the tablets of the law and scrolls of the prophets
which are as inseparable as
sand and desert
ocean and wave
stars and moon
clouds and rain
to remind us that loving God
is not simply about
charitable giving
pious invocations
eloquent preaching
and religious processions
but rather about loving people
all kinds of people
the ones we like and the ones we dislike
the ones we choose and the ones we refuse
the ones on the Christmas list and the ones on the wanted list
the ones far away and the ones nearby
because God truly lives
way upstairs and right next door
in the heavenly realm
and in that neighborhood we abhor.

Seiscientos trece mandamientos
que se aplican a toda la vida
uno para cada día del año solar
y uno para cada miembro del cuerpo humano
algunos negativos y otros positivos
365 no hagas y 248 haz así
fueron sabiamente resumidos por Jesús
en tan solo dos cortos preceptos
como una versión de bolsillo
de las tablas de la ley y los rollos de los profetas
que son tan inseparables como
la arena y el desierto
el océano y la ola
las estrellas y la luna
las nubes y la lluvia
para recordarnos que amar a Dios
no consiste simplemente en
donaciones caritativas
invocaciones piadosas
predicaciones elocuentes
y procesiones religiosas
sino por el contrario es amar a la gente
gente de todo tipo
la que nos gusta y la que nos disgusta
la que elegimos y la que rechazamos
la de la lista de Navidad y de la lista de los buscados
la que está lejos y la que está cercana
porque Dios verdaderamente vive
por allá arriba y a nuestro lado
en el ámbito celestial
y en ese barrio que detestamos.
