A season of preparing
A resource for Sunday's liturgy based on Luke 3:3–6

[John] went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, “The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’ ” —Luke 3:3–6

the hanging of the greens,
the decoration of a tree,
the singing of carols,
the lighting of a wreath

I’m sure this is not exactly
what the prophet had in mind
when he summoned the faithful
to be just, loving, and kind

but somehow the meaning
has been lost in translation
and God’s people are too busy
with seasonal decorations

so we enter another December
lined with high mountains of prejudice,
paved with rough ways of hatred,
and chock-full of crooked paths of injustice

but Advent is a season of preparing
and seeing with the eyes of the heart
the need to build bridges, to join hands
and to abandon the habits that pull us apart

come, Lord Jesus, and show us the way
to live in peace as one people on earth;
give us the courage to prepare the way
so the world can rejoice in your birth

Un recurso para la liturgia dominical basado en Lucas 3:3–6

Juan fue entonces por toda la región cercana al Jordán, y predicaba el bautismo de arrepentimiento para el perdón de pecados, tal y como está escrito en el libro del profeta Isaías: “Una voz clama en el desierto: Preparen el camino del Señor y enderecen sus sendas. Todo valle será rellenado, y todo monte y colina será nivelado. Los caminos torcidos serán enderezados, las sendas dispares serán allanadas, y todos verán la salvación de Dios”. —Lucas 3:3–6

guirnaldas y arbolitos
repletos de ornamentación,
panderetas y villancicos,
abundante iluminación

estoy segura que el profeta
no pesaba en tal frivolidad
cuando le encomendó a los fieles
actos de justicia, amor y bondad

pero tal parece que el significado
se ha perdido en la traducción
y el pueblo de Dios se ocupa
mayormente de la decoración

así entramos a otro diciembre
rodeado de montes de prejuicio,
caminos torcidos por la injusticia,
sendas de odio y veredas de maleficio

pero adviento es época de preparar
y ver con los ojos del corazón
la necesidad de construir puentes y abandonar
los hábitos que causan fragmentación

ven, Señor Jesús, y muéstranos la vía
para vivir juntos con paz y contentamiento;
danos el valor para preparar el camino
de modo que el mundo se regocije en tu nacimiento
