Guide to the William McElwee Miller Papers
William McElwee Miller, the son and grandson of Presbyterian ministers, was born in Middleboro, Kentucky, on December 12, 1892, to Henry and Florence (nee McElwee) Miller. In 1901, his family moved to Rockbridge Baths, near Lexington, Virginia, where his father served as pastor of Bethesda Church. He spent his boyhood years in the manse at Rockbridge Baths where he was tutored by his mother and was prepared by her for college entrance.
Miller earned his B.A. (1912) and his M.A. (1913) from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. In 1912, Miller attended a student conference at Northfield, Massachusetts, and heard Robert E. Speer (Executive Secretary, Board of Foreign Missions, Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A.) preach about missionary work. This furthered Miller’s desire for evangelistic work. In September 1914, Miller entered Princeton Theological Seminary and graduated in 1918. He was ordained to the ministry in 1916 by Lexington Presbytery in the Synod of Virginia, Presbyterian Church in the United States (PCUS). Miller’s desire was to be a missionary to Muslims, and he trained for missionary service at Princeton. Since the PCUS had no missionary work among Muslims, it was with full approval of his church that Miller applied to the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. (PCUSA). In February 1919, he was appointed by the Board of Foreign Missions to the East Persia Mission.
Miller arrived in Persia (now Iran) in November. His first seven months were spent in Tehran in Persian language study, teaching in a school for boys, and engaging in evangelistic work among English-speaking young men. In June 1920, he was assigned to Meshed, a remote station in northeast Iran, near the border of Afghanistan. He was engaged in evangelistic work in the city and toured other regions. In 1922, he became ill and returned to the United States for treatment and recuperation. During this time, he devoted several months to the study of Arabic at the Hartford Theological Seminary in Connecticut.
In November 1924, Miller married Isabelle Haines Nicholson, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a widow with three children. She was appointed by the Board of Foreign Missions to serve as an evangelistic missionary with her husband in the East Persia Mission. In January 1925, they left for Meshed. From there Miller traveled to many cities and villages in the eastern province of Khorasan teaching and preaching the gospel. Isabelle Miller learned Persian, was involved with the school for the missionary children, taught classes in her home for inquirers, visited the sick, and ministered to the underprivileged.
In 1932, the Millers were transferred to Tehran. This city was William Miller’s headquarters for most of his remaining missionary service in Iran. In 1933, he became pastor of the Persian-speaking Evangelical Church in Tehran. He also toured the entire country conducting evangelistic meetings in churches. In 1939, due to ill health, Isabelle returned to the United States with their seven children. They resided in Philadelphia where she managed family affairs until her husband returned from Iran in 1963.
In 1947, Miller became chairman of the Board of Evangelism of the Synod of the Evangelical Church in Iran, a position he held until his retirement from missionary service in 1962. The Board’s functions were to supervise the missionary work of the Evangelical Church and to establish a summer school for training evangelistic workers. Miller was given the responsibility for organizing this school and to visit all the places where the Board’s evangelists were assigned. During the summer of 1962, he was acting director of the School of Evangelism (Garden of Evangelism) in Shimran. After forty-three years in missionary service, Miller retired in December 1962.
In 1963, Miller returned to his wife and family in Philadelphia. His commitment to evangelism and missions continued. For eighteen years he corresponded and occasionally met with staff of the UPCUSA mission agencies, Commission on Ecumenical Mission and Relations (COEMAR) and the successor Program Agency, in reference to missionary facilities in Iran and recruitment of missionaries for foreign assignment. He visited churches in many parts of the country and participated in conferences and conventions advocating missionary service. He encouraged young adults to become involved in spreading the gospel and to seek out community work. From 1963 to 1970, he served as chairman for the Fellowship of Faith for Muslims, a prayer and information service for missions for Muslims based in Toronto, Canada. For twenty-two years he conducted "Days of Prayer" at the headquarters of the Worldwide Evangelical Crusade. He was a member of the Board of Bible and Medical Missionary Fellowship and a trustee of the Kabul Community Christian Church in Afghanistan.
Miller authored a number of books, booklets, and pamphlets that explain Christianity. Many of these have been translated into Persian, Urdu, Bengali, and other Arabic dialects. Your Muslim Guild was written to guide Christians in making friends and converts of Muslims, and Ten Muslims Meet Christ describes Christian converts from Islam. He also co-authored several books and wrote many articles. In the 1970s and early 1980s, Miller wrote study courses for the Pakistan Bible Correspondence School and for International Missions, Inc. in Pakistan.
In December 1980, Isabelle Miller died. William McElwee Miller died on July 7, 1993.
This collection documents William McElwee Miller's evangelistic work and ministry in Iran for the Presbyterian Church from 1919 to 1962 and, to a greater extent, his ministry and commitment to evangelism and missions following his retirement from missionary service in 1962. The papers consist primarily of Miller's correspondence/subject files and writings. Included as well are personal material and radio talks and interviews.
The bulk of the correspondence/subject files comprise three subseries: churches; mission and evangelism; and friends, students, and family. The first subseries chiefly documents Miller's many speaking and preaching engagements at churches in the United States on the topics of evangelism and missions, Islam, and the gospel in Iran and the Muslim world. It also chronicles his close relationship with the Calvin Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which supported his missionary work in Iran from 1935 to 1962, and his association with the Kabul Community Christian Church in Afghanistan, of which he was a trustee. The second subseries primarily documents Miller's participation in missionary conferences and conventions; his association with missionary organizations, particularly the Fellowship of Faith for Muslims; and his communication with staff of UPCUSA mission agencies, the Commission on Ecumenical Mission and Relations (COEMAR) and the successor Program Agency, in reference to missionary facilities in Iran and recruitment of missionaries for foreign assignment. Also included are files on the evangelization of Muslims and Muslim converts. The third subseries mainly documents Miller's wide network of friends in and outside of Iran as well as Iranian students in the United States. The "Dear Friends" letters chronicle Miller's missionary service in Iran, and his evangelistic work and concerns for mission after returning to the United States in 1963. Included as well are several letters from Miller's wife, Isabelle, to family members and several letters to her from soldiers in Iran during World War II.
The remaining correspondence/subject files consist of four smaller subseries. The Afghanistan subseries documents missionary activities with the Kabul Community Christian Church, school, and hospital. The military subseries includes letters of appreciation to Miller from U.S. Army personnel stationed in Iran during World War II, and documents Miller's witness to Iranian military personnel and cadets in the United States. The publishing subseries primarily documents the history, preparation, and publication of Ten Muslims Meet Christ, Miller's book on Christian converts from Islam. Included as well are articles and book reviews on the Muslim world and evangelism. The school subseries documents Miller's interest in and concern for Damavand College (Tehran) and those associated with the school, the development of his study courses on the Gospels for the Pakistan Bible Correspondence School, and his association with Princeton Theological Seminary.
Miller's writings span several decades, from his seminary class papers in the early twentieth century to his tracts for Muslims in the 1970s, and largely document his work on evangelism and missions and in Iran and the Muslim world. Included in this series are Miller's annual personal reports from Iran, as well as his itineration, evangelistic, and church reports. These chronicle his evangelistic work and trips to villages and cities in Iran. The manuscripts and typescripts subseries includes writings documenting mission and evangelism in Iran. The series also consists of writings by other authors, which primarily focus on mission and evangelism in Iran, and a catalog of Miller's library compiled by Robin H. Keisman in 1992. Included as well is a newsletter (1944-1980, bulk 1960-1980) chronicling events in Iran and the personal activities of present and past missionaries.
The personal material primarily consists of biographical information. The radio talks and interviews include a transcript of Cameron Afzal’s 1985 interview with Miller which focuses on many aspects of the Iranian mission.

The William McElwee Miller Papers (C0385), 1931-1979, are held by Princeton University Library. Consists of Miller’s articles, correspondence, notes, miscellaneous materials, and printed material. There are articles on Bahaism; correspondence and notes relating to his books Bahaism: Its Origin, History, and Teachings (1931) and The Baha’I Faith (1974); and correspondence between Miller, Cady Allen, William Orick, and Earl Elder about Miller and Elder’s translation from the Arabic of Al-Kitab Al-Aqdas (1961). In addition, the collection contains printed matter on Bahaism and Iran.
These materials were donated to the Presbyterian Historical Society by William McElwee Miller in 1989 and by William McElwee Miller, Jr. in 1999.
