Guide to the John Nelson Abeel Papers
Open for research.
John Nelson Abeel was born in New York City in 1768. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (Princeton) in 1787 and served as a tutor there for 2 years. He studied theology under John Witherspoon and John Henry Livingston (Dutch Reformed) and was licensed to preach in 1793 by the Dutch Reformed Classis of New York. From 1793-1795 he served as assistant pastor of both Arch Street Presbyterian Church and Third (Old Pine) Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. From 1795 until his death in 1812 he was pastor of the Collegiate Dutch Reformed Church in New York City.
The collection consists of a manuscript sermon on 2 Corinthians 13:5, "Examine Yourselves Whether Ye Be In the Faith." Abeel's annotations to the manuscript indicate that the sermon was preached to New York City congregations at various times from 1797-1806.
The library has an 1801 published address that Abeel preached before the New York Missionary Society, as well as a sermon preached on his death.
