Nominations now open for PC(USA) General Assembly special commission and committees
The deadline for the Commission to Review the Restructuring of PC(USA) World Mission is Oct. 10, while other application windows close Oct. 17
Actions taken at the 227th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, this summer led to the creation of nine different special committees, teams, roundtables, advisory groups and commissions. Applications are now open for eight of the nine entities, with current application deadlines ranging from Oct. 10 to Oct. 17. Additionally, the application for the Korean American Ministry Roundtable will be posted after being reviewed for cultural sensitivity.
The full list of opportunities can be found on the General Assembly nominations page on the PC(USA) website, and is also included below. In order to submit an application, individuals must create an account and then log in. Each committee, commission, or team has a separate application, and applicants are asked not to apply for more than two entities.
The entities currently accepting nominations are:
- Commission to Review the Restructuring of PC(USA) World Mission
- Advisory Group on New Missiology
- Board of Pensions Deliverance Review Group
- Green Future Fund Design Team
- PC(USA) Dialogue with the Disciples of Christ
- Special Committee on Collaborative Approach to Ordained Ministry
- Special Committee on Survivor Support and Accompaniment
- Special Committee on the New Confession
The deadline to apply for the commission on World Mission is Oct. 10. The remaining entities with open applications share a Oct. 17 deadline. The deadline for the Korean American Ministry Roundtable will be shared once the application is open.
On the nominations webpage, interested parties can learn more about the specific work expected of each entity, as well as relevant actions of the 227th General Assembly (2026) and any parameters around who can serve. The Commission to Review the Restructuring of PC(USA) World Mission is the only entity that requires members to be ordained as a ruling elder or teaching elder, though each entity lists preferred skills, experience and interests.
The appointment of committees and commissions to carry out the work of the General Assembly is a key component of Presbyterian tradition and identity.
According to the Book of Order, one of two governing documents of the PC(USA), all councils of the church, including the General Assembly, can designate committees or commissions “as they deem necessary and helpful for the accomplishment of the mission of the church, and may create such structures jointly with other councils, in consultation with the next higher council. In appointing such committees and commissions councils shall be mindful of the principles of unity in diversity consistent with the provisions of this Constitution.”
That includes the committees that consider and vote on actions during the assembly itself, as well as those who do work between assemblies based on the assembly’s actions, like the entities currently seeking applicants.
The PC(USA) has a stated commitment to diversity of representation on all General Assembly committees, commissions, roundtables, and other entities.
“When we ensure that the rich diversity of our membership has access to representation and participation in the church’s governance, we recognize that the categories of diversity of race, ethnicity, age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, geography, or theological conviction are not just simply categories for us to be checking,” said valerie izumi, a ruling elder who serves as Assistant Stated Clerk managing General Assembly Nominations and Representation in Presbyterian Life & Witness.
“This rich diversity brings to the table the valuable lived experiences, perspectives, skills, knowledge, and talents of Presbyterians enriching and deepening the mission and ministry of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).”
Once the application deadline for each entity has passed, applications will be reviewed and selected individuals will be appointed to serve by the Co-Moderators of the 227th General Assembly, the Rev. Marta Pumroy-Cordero and the Rev. Dr. Kris Schondelmeyer.
