The South African Council of Churches (SACC) has joined with other civil society organizations across the country to call for the resignation of South African President Jacob Zuma. The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) recognizes the bold and prophetic witness of South African church leaders and encourages Presbyterians to pray fervantly for peace, public accountability, and good governance in South Africa and around the world.
President Zuma’s administration has been beset by scandal, even before he took office in 2009. A series of reports from South Africa’s Public Protector have been critical of matters such as the president’s use of public funds to upgrade his personal home and estate, and his close (and possibly corrupt) association with certain business magnates.

James Chasten and Edward Brady of Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia entered the Board of Pensions third floor. Exit signs glowed in darkened hallways, quiet except for the soft hum of the mechanical systems deep inside the 29-story building. Office chairs sat jumbled in the corners of bare cubicles.

The Rev. Dr. J. Herbert Nelson II is calling the church to do what is just — to do what is right. Nelson, stated clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), spoke each morning during the annual Synod School of the Synod of Lakes and Prairies, telling Presbyterians to “get off your blessed assurances and do something for the Lord.”
It took many years for the Rev. Kris Schondelmeyer to acknowledge and seek treatment for the sexual assault he suffered as a teenager at the hands of a trusted pastor. He did not imagine that it would also take many years for leaders in his denomination to accept responsibility for what happened to him and take decisive steps to protect children in the church.
