When Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, the Rev. Jan Dus was in Yemen, working at a hospital on a mission assignment for Doctors Without Borders. He knew immediately he needed to go home to the Czech Republic to try to mobilize help. “Honestly, I had no idea,” Dus said in an interview recently. “I couldn’t imagine the war would last this long.”
Plenary sessions didn’t provide all the news coming out of the 226th General Assembly this week. Reporters and videographers found feature stories both inside and outside the Salt Palace Convention Center. Among them were these 10.
Commissioners to the 226th General Assembly discerned God’s will in numerous ways during the past six days. What follows are 10 of the most significant things they did at the Salt Palace Convention Center and in neighboring churches between June 29 and July 4.
“For GA Daily and the GA news team, that’s a wrap from Salt Lake City. Happy Fourth of July. We’ll see you in Milwaukee in 2026.”
With those words, GA Daily host Fred Tangeman concluded the final episode of GA Daily for the 226th General Assembly.
As people began filing out of the plenary hall at the close of business on the Assembly’s last day — no doubt to catch their earlier flights — the strains of Healey Willan’s “Finale Jubilante” filled the space.
With one hand each on their gavel, the Co-Moderators of the 226th General Assembly, the Rev. Tony Larson and the Rev. CeCe Armstrong, brought the Assembly to a close Thursday morning, jointly declaring “the 226th General Assembly now adjourned.”
Ensuring that everyone had a voice in the decision-making process of General Assembly was once again a major focus in Salt Lake City the past two weeks. Organizers introduced equity primes into the committee work as well as in plenaries themselves and they are making a difference.
On Wednesday, the Assembly approved Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as the site of the 227th General Assembly. Milwaukee was selected from a pool of cities by the Committee on the Office of General Assembly (COGA) back in February. This location for the plenaries along with the recommendation to hold virtual committees prior to gathering as a whole assembly was sent to the General Assembly Procedures Committee for deliberation, a process which took time and energy.
