Halfway through the General Assembly’s strenuous debate on a recommendation from the Committee on Environmental and Climate Justice, Co-Moderator the Rev. CeCe Armstrong paused to convene the body in prayer, having just received word that Hurricane Beryl, then heading through Jamaica and moving through the Caribbean, had just been classified as a Category 5 storm.
Providentially, the Rev. Dr. R. Osbert James was attending the 226th General Assembly as an Ecumenical Advisory Delegate rather than being at home in Grenada, where he is pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Grenada.
Hurricane Beryl, which was upgraded to a monstrous Category 5 storm on Tuesday, struck Carriacou the day before. Carriacou, an island of Grenada, saw at least three people killed, according to an Associated Press report on Tuesday.
The Women of Faith Awards were established in 1986 to honor women members of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) whose lives exemplify their Christian commitments. Nominations are received from throughout the church, and honorees are selected by a committee of representatives from groups related to Racial Equity & Women’s Intercultural Ministries and Presbyterian Women. Awards are presented at the Women of Faith Breakfast during the General Assembly.
An ecumenical worship service led Tuesday’s General Assembly morning session. Inspired by the Assembly’s theme, “Live Into Hope,” the Rev. Prof. Dr. Jerry Pillay, general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), thanked the delegates and congregants for decades of faithful support of the ecumenical movement and the WCC. He brought greetings from WCC member churches in 120 countries around the world.
Monday night’s plenary session opened with an address from Dr. Monica Schaap Pierce, executive director of Christian Churches Together, a fellowship of Christian communions representing 34 denominations and 57 million American Christians, of which the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has been a part since CCT’s founding.
Monday's Ecumenical Dinner, formerly known as the Stated Clerk’s Dinner, was a recognition of the faithfulness of working together with partners across the globe.
Acting Stated Clerk the Rev. Bronwen Boswell gave the opening prayer and greetings, emphasizing the continued commitment of working together. “I think there's an opportunity for us to broaden and bring communities together,” Boswell said. “As society changes, there are ways in which religious communities all over the world are responding to social movements.”
Following a joyful morning session—in which the Rev. Jihyun Oh was elected as the Stated Clerk of the General Assembly of the PC(USA) and five PC(USA)-related seminary presidents were confirmed — the fifth plenary session moved from an air of celebration to the more serious consideration of CF-18, CR-07 on Transparency of Seminaries Around Investments, which had been arrested from the morning plenary.

Those attending the Ruling Elders Luncheon Monday could easily detect that Martha Miller, Manager of Ministry Education and Support in the Office of the General Assembly, is also a certified Christian educator.
As the host of the sold-out luncheon, Miller placed everyday items — a rubber band, a spool of thread, a measuring tape, a seashell and other items — in a small container on each table to generate discussion.
