What happens when you open up to listening about racism? For some, it is something in the past, but for many there are daily reminders of past or current practices. As Christians, we strive to be like Jesus; recognizing the existence of racism is step one to fighting for justice and bringing wholeness to ALL of God’s people.

At its annual meeting last month, the McCormick Theological Seminary Board of Trustees elected Connie Lindsey of Chicago as Chair. According to a seminary news release, she is Executive Vice President and Head of Corporate Social Responsibility and Global Diversity and Inclusion at the Northern Trust. She succeeds Peter J. Cochrane of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis. The Board also elected the Rev. Erica Y. Liu, co-pastor of Pres House in Madison, Wis., as Vice Chair.

Seminary professor that he is, the Rev. Dr. Cliff Kirkpatrick slipped about 50 staff at the Presbyterian Center a surprise Wednesday. He gave them a 22-question pop quiz on ecumenical and interfaith developments that have occurred over the last century.

Building on the momentum of the past year, the Reverend Dr. J. Herbert Nelson, II, Stated Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), will lead a group through the streets of Louisville, Kentucky, next week, calling for an end to the cash bail system. Nelson has been actively raising awareness on the issue since a march in downtown St. Louis at the 223rd General Assembly (2018) last year.

On many Pentecost Sundays, which can be a movable feast like Easter Sunday, the life of a congregation sometimes intersects with the long weekend of Memorial Day holiday, the unofficial beginning of the summer season. As well as many graduations taking place around this time, a growing number of churches now hold services for ordination and installation before the summer begins.   

To celebrate Intercultural Church Day, worshipers at the Presbyterian Center in Louisville Wednesday were invited to sing verses of well-known hymns — “How Great Thou Art” and “Blessed Assurance, Jesus is Mine!” among them — in English, Korean and Spanish, as well as in the “language closest to your heart.”
