Is mission a one-way street? Not to people in Denver Presbytery or the Presbytery of Zimbabwe of the Uniting Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa (UPCSA). These two presbyteries have been faithful witnesses to the unity of the body of Christ for more than a decade, despite the nearly 10,000 miles between them.

Off the grid, non-existent, outcasts. Those are some of the words used to describe a tribal group in southern India struggling to survive with little food, no homes and little opportunity for improvement.

Chantal Atnip, a ruling elder from the Presbytery of Carlisle, who announced last fall she is standing for Moderator of the 223rd General Assembly (2018), has named the Reverend Ken Hockenberry, a pastor in the Presbytery of Chicago to be her Vice Moderator running mate.

Atnip said she recently circulated the GA223 commissioners list to friends and supporters “and the one common denominator among all the responses was Ken Hockenberry.” She said when she approached him about being her running mate, “I half expected him to laugh at me but he didn’t. As we talked over the ensuing week, we found we have similar views and similar senses of humor, which is very important.”

During their Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Facebook Live conversation on Friday, March 16, Rosa Blanca Miranda and Jieun Kim Han spoke about their personal experiences during Lent and how they’ve changed their views of what Lent means to them.

Without a pastor’s love for fly-fishing, Monica Carrillo — who crossed the Arizona-Mexico border when she was 13 — might still be living in the shadows. And the Rev. Karlin Bilcher might still be unhealthy and depressed, after a terrible first experience in ministry that nearly cost him his family.

“I call it the holy place,” said Sultan,* a young man from Eritrea who came to St. Andrew’s Refugee Services (StARS) hoping to access education through the Unaccompanied Youth Bridging Program, a specialized initiative designed to assist young refugees in Egypt without a parent or guardian. Since he was here with his family, he was ineligible to enroll. But he was persistent, eventually landing a job as a teaching assistant in the program.  Over the years, he has become a leader among the staff at StARS and now works as a program assistant in the Refugee Legal Aid Program, and as a StARS ambassador, meeting with visitors and planning events.
