In June, many earth-care Presbyterians gathered at the PC(USA) General Assembly in Portland, OR.
Presbyterians learned about the local environment on various mission trips offered by Cascades presbytery, gathered with other passionate individuals at the Presbyterians for Earth Care luncheon and walked the halls of the LEED certified Oregon Convention Center with recycling, energy efficient, and compost available throughout the facility.
Of course of prime interest is the business done by the Assembly on the overtures given to the Environment & Immigration committee.
You may particularly be interested in:
- an overture on a Book of Order change to add "caring for God's creation" as one of the marks of membership,
- a piece related to advocacy on coal train pollution, and
- ongoing conversations about divestment from the fossil fuel industry.
Pieces on the fossil fuel divestment issue are varied: a MRTI perspective pre-Assembly, a blog written about civil disagreements during the Assembly, a piece from Fossil Free PCUSA perspective post-Assembly, and observations from the Presbyterian Outlook magazine. There are more opinions shared about this debate and others in the Unbound journal leading up to and through the Assembly.
