Presbyterians and other people of faith are becoming more intentional about planting their church grounds with the thriving of God’s creatures in mind, and a webinar offered last week by Presbyterians for Earth Care explained how and where that’s happening.
This spring, an amendment to the Book of Order’s section G-2.0804 (TERMS OF CALL) was ratified by the presbyteries. The historic vote mandating a minimum of 12 weeks of paid family leave for called and installed pastors at congregations is the culmination of a six-year story of General Assembly process, but also of grassroots church advocacy.
With the amendment settled, it’s now time for mid councils and congregations to implement the policy, and for those hoping to raise minimum levels of care for families of all PC(USA) workers to look to the future.
In the Book of Order, members are called upon to be involved in the ministry of Christ’s Church in a variety of ways, including by “proclaiming the good news in word and deed” and “taking part in the common life and worship of a congregation” (G-1.0304). In our minds we could probably categorize church activities into these two separate areas, but for ruling elders, these sentences encompass —wholistically — our responsibility to serve as leaders of the congregation.
Addressing the Class of 2023 at Davis & Elkins College during Friday’s baccalaureate service, the Rev. Dr. J. Herbert Nelson, II assured graduates that “it doesn’t matter if you came here cum laude or thank you Lordy. If you wear that tassel today, say thank you for the amazing way family and friends have nurtured you.”
Nelson, the Stated Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), was introduced by Davis & Elkins president the Rev. Chris Wood, who told those gathered, “It never ceases to amaze me the Creator of the universe is individually interested in our lives.”
A panel of New Testament scholars convened by Union Presbyterian Seminary late last month took on the uncomfortable reality that “contrary to popular opinion, the Bible has not always been an ally in the struggle for antiracist work. Though replete with Scriptures that convey God’s vision for a world of equality and justice where every human being is created in the common image of God and viewed as equally valuable, the Bible has also been used for more nefarious ends,” including, as a webinar promotion put it, “theologically justified supremacist thought.”
