Several thousand people are expected to gather in Portland, Oregon, on Saturday, June 18, for the opening worship service of the 222nd General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

But the congregation could potentially be much larger—with groups of Presbyterians across the country using live stream technology to participate in opening worship from their own church sanctuaries and meeting spaces. The Committee on the Office of the General Assembly (COGA) is encouraging congregations and mid councils to gather groups in their locations to worship with the assembly via live stream.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) wrapped up its annual meeting in Louisville, Kentucky, this weekend just a few miles from the national offices of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The conference, which included an appearance by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, brought an estimated 75,000 people from across the country who attended seminars, auctions and talks by various speakers.

In a twist of fate that actually began in an Iraqi refugee camp several years ago, five peace and justice proponents from the Community of Living Traditions at Stony Point Center drove 800 miles to hear and bear witness to a strong lineup of speakers, activists, and theologians focused on nurturing paths to nonviolence. The annual Festival of Faiths conference, a five-day celebration of music, poetry, film, theatre and dialogue, featured spiritual luminaries such as Catholic Archbishop Joseph Kurtz,  Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, and Rev. Allan Boesak, a leading South African anti-apartheid advocate who worked with Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela among its presenters.

More than a dozen items will be debated by the Mission Coordination committee for referral to the 222nd General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) meeting June 18-25, 2016 in Portland, Oregon.
