The Rev. Keith Gunter remembers what the first year of starting a new worshiping community was like. He’d moved from Georgia to Tennessee with his wife and one year old child to start, from scratch, what is now New Creation Church.
Education has always been a part of the “Presbyterian DNA,” beginning with John Calvin, who helped bring public education to Geneva. And—for those denominations that follow in Calvin’s footsteps and stand in the Reformed tradition—education walks hand in hand with lifelong learning.
Big Tent 2015 may be over, but the excitement it fostered continues in the more than 800 people who attended the event. Hosted at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, the campus location was a first for Big Tent. Following is a brief video overview produced by Presbyterian News Service.
The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has launched two new funds development initiatives to meet the needs of the changing population. These initiatives directly affect the preparedness of racial ethnic and immigrant leaders in the church and provide for a more intercultural church body as both the church and the country grow in diversity.
“There are some things we’d like to stay dead—and a real discussion on racism is one of those things,” says Alonzo Johnson, a mission associate for the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program. Johnson and his colleague, Blake Collins, a mission engagement specialist and young adult volunteer with the PC(USA), used the story of Lazarus to frame their workshop on how congregations can address racism at the recent Big Tent conference held in Knoxville, Tenn.
The July 27 announcement of the Rev. Milton Mejía as the new general secretary of the Latin American Council of Churches (CLAI) was greeted by the general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), the Rev. Dr. Olav Fykse Tveit, as “an expressive gesture of care for the treasure of ecumenical witness.”
“If you tell the story of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), you tell the story of a number of significant migrations,” said the Rev. Dr. Charles Wiley III, coordinator of the office of Theology and Worship. “It is important for us to recognize that immigration is not a new phenomenon but integral to our very history from the very beginning.”
Meeting July 29 and 30 on the campus of the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, representatives of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)’s mid-councils—synod and presbytery executives and stated clerks—worshiped, talked, and celebrated and pondered the ongoing mission of the PC(USA).

The Executive Committee of the Presbyterian Mission Agency Board (PMAB) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) met for its annual retreat at the offices of the Presbytery of Philadelphia (Pa.), July 22-24. In addition to business items addressed, the committee participated in four site visits, learning more about ministry initiatives in the Philadelphia area.
