Presbyterians across the denomination will have the opportunity to get some new perspectives on evangelism next month in a Leader Formation webinar titled “Breaking the Myth of the Presbyterian Fear of the ‘E’ Word.”
“We want to rekindle the yearning to share the Good News of Christ’s love,” said the Rev. Dr. Cheni Khonje, who will be leading the webinar. “We will using some different concepts to develop and grow disciples, including the Yao mores of 'kalibu' and 'ulongo,' radical welcome and relationship.”
Khonje was born in Malawi and became a political refugee when she was less than a month old. She, along with her siblings, grew up in Lusaka, Zambia, and Hilversum, the Netherlands. They moved to New York City when her mother began working with the United Nations. Khonje, who recently joined the Committee on the Office of the General Assembly, is a graduate of Chadron State College in Nebraska and holds a master’s degree in medical microbiology from Long Island University. She graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary and holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from United Lutheran Seminary.
The webinar will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Thursday, Feb. 23. It is free for participants and is funded by per capita dollars. The registration deadline is Feb. 15.
“We will be providing this webinar in several languages based on the requests made during registration,” said Martha Miller, manager of ruling elder resources and educator certification, in OGA’s Mid Council Ministries. “That is why we set the deadline one week before the event itself. We want to be able to arrange those services.”
The webinar is part of OGA’s ongoing Leader Formation initiative that was launched two years ago to provide training and support to ruling elders and deacons in the PC(USA).
