The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) joins our partners in the Hong Kong Christian Council in deep concern for peace and justice for the people of Hong Kong.
Protestors have engaged in peaceful demonstrations to seek a government that is responsive to the needs of all Hong Kong’s citizens and residents, and not just those with wealth, power, and political connections.
The Hong Kong Christian Council’s statement notes that:
- The government should not resort to using potentially lethal weapons against unarmed demonstrators;
- The government should engage in dialogue with people of different political stances and listen to their opinion towards authentic universal suffrage; and
- Demonstrators should stick to the principle of peaceful protest.
We call Presbyterians to join our sisters and brothers in Hong Kong in prayer that the demonstrators will remain peaceful, the police will show restraint as they enforce the law, the government will deal rationally and nonviolently with the conflicts, and the Christian community in Hong Kong will walk and work with the people for peace, justice, and the building of a Godly community.
