Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) and it’s ecumenical partners ― including the National Council of Churches in the Philippines, the Asia Disaster Response and Recovery Network, Church World Service (CWS) and the ACT Alliance ― are readying appropriate relief responses to victims of Typhoon Haiyan, which struck the Philippines Nov. 8.
The storm has been identified as one of the strongest typhoons in recorded history. A CNN report states that Haiyan was stronger than Hurricane Katrina and Superstorm Sandy combined.
According to the Philippine Red Cross, more than 1,200 people have been confirmed dead in the storm, but most unofficial estimates expect the death toll to approach 10,000. Several hundred thousand Filipinos have been displaced by the storm, which was centered in the central Philippines city of Tacloban, a provincial capital.
Presbyterian World Mission has received word that PC(USA) mission co-worker Cobbie Palm and his wife, Dessa, are safe, as are all of the Young Adult Volunteers currently serving in the Philippines. Former General Assembly Moderator Bruce Reyes-Chow, who is on a teaching assignment at Silliman Divinity School in Dumaguete, is also reported safe.
PDA is consulting with its ecumenical partners on how best to begin relief efforts. Communications were out throughout the weekend in the Philippines and immediate relief efforts are being hampered by the sheer extent of the destruction.
Local sources and international news agencies report severe destruction with damaged roads and buildings, downed power lines and telecommunications and flooded villages.
Damage to airports and roads is severely limiting access to the hardest-hit areas. A report from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) states that roundtrip travel on the only cleared road which connects the airport to the Tacloban currently takes about six hours.
The initial response will include the provision of non-food items, material resources, drinking water, emergency shelter kits and cash-for-work-programs. PDA will respond with One Great Hour of Sharing and designated funds as the assessment is complete, needs are identified, and the appeal for assistance is issued.
Haiyan weakened to a tropical storm as it made landfall near the Vietnam-China border. While the impact of the weakened typhoon in Vietnam is yet to be fully assessed, CWS reports it will respond there with recovery support if it is needed.

공항과 도로의 피해로 말미암아 피해가 가장 심한 지역들에 접근하는 것이 매우 제한되어 있는 상태이다. 인도주의 업무를 담당하고 있는 유엔 사무국의 보고에 의하면, 공항과 타클로반을 이어주는 길들 중에서 유일하게 복구가된 길을 통해 그 두 곳을 오가는 시간이 약 6시간 정도 걸린다고 한다.
우선적으로는 비 식품, 재료 자원들, 식수, 비상용 침구, 그리고 작업 프로그램을 위한 현금을 공급할 것이다. 장로교 재해부는 피해에 대한 평가가 끝나고, 필요한 것들이 확인되며, 지원 요청이 발행되는대로 고귀한 나눔의 시간 (One Great Hour of Sharing)의 기금과 지정 기금으로 지원에 나설 것이다.
하이엔은 베트남과 중국 국경 근처의 육지에 인접하면서 열대폭풍으로 약화되었다. 베트남에서 약화된 태풍이 어떠한 피해를 입혔는지에 대한 평가가 아직 충분하지 않지만, 교회 세계 봉사단체(CWS)는 필요하다면 그곳의 회복을 위해 지원을 할 것이라고 보고했다.

LOUISVILLE — El Programa presbiteriano de asistencia en desastres (PDA por sus siglas en inglés) y sus socios ecuménicos ― incluyendo al Consejo nacional de iglesias en las Filipinas, la Red de respuesta y recuperación de desastres de Asia, y el Servicio mundial de iglesias (CWS por sus siglas en inglés) y la alianza ACT ― están preparando la ayuda apropiada para las víctimas del tifón Haiyan que azotó a las Filipinas el 8 de noviembre.
La tormenta ha sido identificada como uno de los tifones más fuertes en la historia. Un reporte de la CNN dice que Haiyan fue más fuerte que la combinación del huracán Katrina y la súper tormenta Sandy.
Segun la Cruz roja filipina, se ha confirmado la muerte de más de 1,200 personas, pero la mayoría de estimados no oficiales proyecta hasta 10,000 personas fallecidas. Varios cientos de miles de filipinos/as han sido desplazados/as por la tormenta, la cual estuvo concentrada en la ciudad de Tacloban en el centro del país y una capital de provincia.
Misión mundial ha recibido la noticia de que el compañero de trabajo misionero de la Iglesia presbiteriana Cobbie Pam y su esposa Dessa están a salvo, así como también nuestros adultos jóvenes voluntarios que están sirviendo actualmente en las Filipinas. El ex moderador de la Asamblea general Bruce Reyes-Chow, quien se encuentra en una asignación educativa en la Escuela de Divinidad Silliman, también se reportó sano y salvo.
PDA está consultando con sus socios ecuménicos sobre la mejor manera de comenzar las actividades de ayuda. Las conversaciones sucedieron a lo largo del fin de semana en las Filipinas y los esfuerzos de ayuda inmediata se han visto obstaculizados por la gran magnitud de la destrucción.
