Okay, so maybe attending a General Assembly over the Fourth of July weekend isn’t as exciting as a quarter-mile drag strip (and let’s not forget - our nation’s founders assembled over the Fourth of July weekend before it was the Fourth of July — and they did it while perspiring profusely in wool flannel and powdered wigs!). But there’s still plenty of action to go around — and you won’t miss it if you sneeze!
Forego the Sunday morning TV talk shows for some lively discussions at several breakfast options. (See the program book for meal sponsors, locations and ticket information.)
At 10 a.m., it’s Sunday go-to-meetin’ time. Thousands of local Presbyterians will join Assembly-goers in worship, during which outgoing Moderator the Rev. Bruce Reyes-Chow will preach, and both sacraments will be celebrated.
Don’t forget: At 5:15 p.m., board shuttle buses for Nicollet Island and the Moderator’s reception to be among the first to shake his or her hand on the commencement of the two-year term.
And take heart: The Committee on Local Arrangements knows that it’s the Fourth of July! The Moderator’s reception will segue to a picnic at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 for age 13 and up, $6 for ages 4 to 12, and free for children under 3. The evening will conclude with the Minneapolis “Red, White and Boom” fireworks display, from which Nicollet Island is a perfect spot for viewing!
