The Prophets and Passion Week: A little housecleaning

Matthew 21:13 • He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer; but you have made it a den of robbers.’ ”
Jesus entered the temple and was outraged by what he saw. Status and wealth determined one’s offering and therefore determined one’s perceived worth before God. And he rebelled.
The church first and foremost is a spiritual place of total acceptance. All who enter are welcome, regardless of one’s status in the community. Yet in far too many congregations, segregation persists. God called the church to be a place where the values of God rule. God is not partial; neither should we be.
Lord, bless your church to be your house of prayer for all people. Amen.
