The Prophets and the Teachings of Jesus: Family dynamics

Micah 7:6 • For the son treats the father with contempt, the daughter rises up against her mother, the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; your enemies are members of your own household.

Luke 12:53 • They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.

Families are the foundation of any society. When they are close and healthy, it’s a wonderful thing. But when they are divided, it’s unhealthy and damaging. Jesus said that faith in him can divide families as values collide. In Christ, we are given a new family, fully experienced in the church. There we discover what it means to live as the family of God where division is overcome.

Lord, we are thankful for the family of Christ that brings us together in love. Amen.
