The Prophets and the Teachings of Jesus: Lord of the harvest

Haggai 1:6 • You have sown much, and harvested little ...

Matthew 9:37–38 • Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”

One of the most difficult places for recruitment is in the church. Pastors estimate that a small percentage of members offer the vast majority of service, giving of tithes and attending worship. Blessed are those who do. They are participating in God’s work of redemption for the world. Their efforts are multiplied by the Holy Spirit. Jesus told his disciples that they would do greater work than even he did. As the song from the Consolers, a husband and wife duo from the ’50s and ’60s, says, “May the work I’ve done speak for me.” Work on.

Lord, we offer ourselves for the work that others won’t do. Amen.
