A River of Hope

In the heart of Meyer, Haiti, families have never had consistent, reliable access to clean water. 

Located 10 kilometers east of the coastal city of Jacmel, Meyer residents faced two choices for clean water: to treat their nearby water with chemicals or to travel to Jacmel to fill containers with what purified water they could find. 

That is, until a transformative, multi-year partnership was created between the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and Living Waters for the World, a trusted partner working in Haiti, who is working alongside local individuals to sustain these projects. Together, they were able to place a water purification system in the Meyer community and train residents to maintain and manage water distribution. This new purification system promises to bring health, dignity, income and relief to families who have struggled far too long without reliable access to clean water. 

Nurse Monia Jean, a health educator working closely on this project, shared, “A local mother shared with me how difficult it has been to provide safe water for her children. Families like hers have had to walk long distances or spend money on chemicals to ensure safe drinking water. Now, they have reliable access to clean, sustainable water right in their neighborhoods.” 

Another neighbor, Father Guy Bellange, pastor of a local Episcopal parish, shared that he is not only grateful for the new water source but is also committed to maintaining the system, understanding that clean water is a necessity for any community’s well-being.

For the residents of Meyer, the new system means peace of mind. It means no longer worrying about whether the water will make them sick. 

As Father Bellange embraces these updates, his message is clear: “When clean water flows, so does hope, dignity and the promise of a better future.”
