The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has a long-standing commitment to water justice and care for creation, focusing on issues like clean water access, water scarcity, environmental stewardship and the relationship between clean water and our sacraments.
The PC(USA) recognizes that safe and clean drinking water is a human right and works to ensure access to it, especially for those facing water scarcity. The PC(USA) also supports initiatives that provide access to sustainable water sources and sanitation, particularly in the developing world. We partner with organizations like Asofénix in Nicaragua, who is providing access to clean drinking water in communities through the development of solar-powered water systems. The PC(USA) encourages good stewardship of water resources, promoting practices like water conservation and responsible use. Resources and educational materials, like the “Sustaining Waters” guide, help people learn about water stewardship and engage in conversations about water issues.
The PC(USA) works to ensure that communities have access to clean water and sanitation during times of crisis, including assisting with government relief efforts related to water, as seen in the case of the Flint water crisis. The PC(USA) recognizes the link between water access and social justice, particularly for marginalized communities.
