The dog days of summer

The dog days of summer got here early this year.  We hit records a number of days running where I live (in Nashville, TN)– one day is was 109 degrees!  On those kinds of days, the desire and need isfor relief and respite from heat and even more importantly, water for a parched land.  The past two days have brought a series of summer thunderstorms and you can almost hear the land breathe a sigh of relief for the rain.  The most recent news stories are now telling us this may be our new normal.  If that is the case, many of us will be living in locations where we are going to have to learn to adapt to these changing conditions.

Ah, more change.  We are already facing so much of it.  We may yearn for a reduction in the demands of change, but we probably won't get it.  So what are we to do?  The old hymn tells us --

What a fellowship, what a joy divine, Leaning on the everlasting arms; What a blessedness, what a peace is mine, Leaning on the everlasting arms.

Leaning, leaning, safe and secure from allalarms;

Leaning, leaning, leaning on the everlasting arms.

I don’t mean return to the old days.   I don’ t mean avoid the changes in our world.  But I do mean return to that which about God is unchangeable and deeply true no matter what.   What is true about God’s love for you through Jesus Christ, no matter what?  Do you really know it?  Can you express it?  Can you trust in it?
