About this blog

Brian Frick is the Associate for Camp and Conferences Ministries with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). He has been involved in camp and conference ministry since high school. For the past ten years, Brian has served as program director of Johnsonburg Center in New Jersey, Westminster Woods in California, and Heartland Center in Missouri.

Camp and conference ministry compliments and partners with other ministry aspects of our church to foster faith development and reflection. As our communities and our church changes, our ministries need to grow and adapt with creative and emergent programming and leadership to meet new realities.

These blogs entries, though varied, are intended to spur thought and conversation around the opportunities and challenges before us.

Christian Camping Summit with the NCCC

Mount Meeker

In September 2010 at Highlands Camp and Retreat Center in Allenspark, CO, the Christian denominations in the National Council of Churches of Christ who have affiliated camp and conference programs are invited to a Summit Gathering!  Active in the annual meetings of the NCCC Committee on Outdoor Ministry are the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Church of the Bretheren, Presbyterian Church (USA), United Methodist, United Church of Christ, and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) the the intent is for more denominations to join us at the Summit.
Together, we have over 600 camp and conferences in the United States welcoming campers each summer and adults throughout the year and offering sacred space and spiritual programs that give all the chance to encounter - or re-encounter the living God - Emmanuel - God Among Us.
Though we have different creeds and differences in Theological understandings, we have so much more in common than we do that divides us.  This will be a great opportunity to share, showcase, and learn from each other.  It is together and learning from each other that we will be able to continue to live out God's call in the mainline church to provide spaces apart, "thin places" where we can encounter God in a way we can't elsewhere.
As we look towards the future, I can see our denominations reaching out and sharing more, and I know our camp and conference centers will be places where that happens, and will be leading the way.
I can't wait to share with you the experiences of that gathering!
