About ten years ago, religious pollsters predicted that the mega-church model would decline and that disillusioned evangelicals would be searching for new spiritual homes. The advice was clear: the mainline churches had better be ready for those who would find their kind of Christianity more helpful than simplistic and individualistic messages and practices of conservative churches.
But something went wrong. Evidently we weren’t attractive to those who wanted something more. And evidently, as Frank Schaeffer is discovering, we still aren’t: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/frank-schaeffer/missing-the-mainline-prot_b_1344757.html?ref=tw Or maybe we would be if folks knew we existed and how our kind of Christianity differs from what they see on TV such as the latest show GCB (just don’t even get me started on this one!).
Isn’t it about time that we focused on being who we have traditionally been—people living within the mystery of God revealed in Christ through Holy Spirit? And isn’t it past time we discovered the important mandate we have to invite people to journey with us under and within the wonder of Christ’s Dominion?
