First Week of Advent
Don’t throw stones, share the rock
Psalm 18:2
The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
My house sits on a corner lot, facing a busy intersection. Years ago we invested in several large boulders, which were strategically placed to discourage cars from climbing up on the curb. They have mostly been effective, except for the time when a subcompact car snuck through two rocks and “scored a goal” against the masonry.
Over time, we noticed how the boulders became resting places for walkers. Rather than shoo them away, we have shared the boulders. Truly, they are no longer our rocks; they bring safety and comfort to many in our neighborhood. In the same manner, although the psalmist speaks in the first person singular, we know that God is our shared rock.
What practices tend to drive people away from our lives and our congregations?
God of Advent, help us to be generous in sharing the hope of your protection. Amen.

No tires piedras, comparte la roca
Salmo 18:2
Mi Señor y Dios, tú eres mi roca, mi defensor, ¡mi libertador! Tú eres mi fuerza y mi escudo, mi poderosa salvación, mi alto refugio. ¡En ti confío!
Mi casa ocupa un lote esquinero, de cara a una intersección muy transitada. Hace años compramos varias rocas grandes, que están estratégicamente colocadas para disuadir a los vehículos de que se trepen en la acera. Han sido efectivas, excepto la vez en que un carro subcompacto se coló entre dos rocas y «anotó un gol» contra la mampostería.
Con el paso del tiempo notamos que las rocas se convirtieron en un lugar de descanso para los peatones. En vez de espantarlos, hemos compartido las rocas. En verdad, ya no son nuestras rocas; éstas le ofrecen seguridad y confort a mucha gente de nuestro vecindario. Del mismo modo, aunque el salmista habla en primera persona singular, sabemos que Dios es nuestra roca compartida.
¿Qué prácticas tienden a alejar a la gente de nuestras vidas y nuestras congregaciones?
Dios del Adviento, ayúdanos a mostrar generosidad al compartir la esperanza de tu protección. Amén.
