Mozambique
Mozambique, one of the world’s poorest countries, has suffered from 16 years of civil war, with both internal and external displaced persons (some 1 million refugees). As refugees returned from Malawi, there have been language and assimilation problems—some have felt stronger ties with the Malawi church than the weaker Presbyterian Church of Mozambique (IPM).
The PC(USA) is involved in Mozambique through mission personnel and through partner church relationships. In cooperation with its partner church, the Presbyterian Church of Mozambique (IPM), the PC(USA) has assisted the ministry of a Malawian missionary in the Tete region. This is an area of particularly productive evangelism, and there are now some 20 congregations. The PC(USA) has had mission personnel in Mozambique who helped train pastors in planting churches and has given support to IPM’s theological seminary. Through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance the PC(USA) has also given aid in times of flood and drought. |
