Cyprus
Two of the most significant Christian ecumenical bodies in the region have centers in Cyprus. The Middle East Council of Churches, whose headquarters is in Beirut, Lebanon, has a liaison office in Limassol. The Fellowship of Middle East Evangelical Churches (FMEEC) is based in Ayia Napa. FMEEC, representing the family of Reformed, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Congregational, Methodist and Episcopal churches from North Africa to Iran, emphasizes leadership development, Christian unity and service. Through this important PC(USA) regional partner the member churches gather as one family, share in many areas of common concerns, cooperate in common actions and offer a qualitative contribution to the ecumenical movement.
Although the Mediterranean island of Cyprus remains politically and geographically divided into Greek and Turkish sectors, the Republic of Cyprus joined the European Union (EU) on May 1, 2004. Therefore EU laws and benefits will apply only to the Greek Cypriot community. |
