It's back to school for more than 100 children displaced in Muzaffarabad by the devastating earthquake that toppled the valley. As dawn breaks in one of the many tent cities set up as relief centers, children gather to start a day of learning. They don't have much to learn with —
a few notebooks and pens. But they have the enthusiasm and determination to move on.

As said by the director Mr. Marvin Parvez of Church World Service -Pakistan/Afghanistan, this earthquake will be remembered as the catastrophe that targeted children the most. It is said that a whole generation of children

perished within the earthquake. According to figures, a total of 2,448 schools were totally leveled, with 1,753 boys' schools and 695 girls' schools.

The makeshift tent schools being set up within the shelter tent villages are a ray of light for the children. It's a welcome respite for the children as they start their day writing on their new textbooks, playing within the world of alphabets and numbers, hoping for normality to return to their lives.

Many children who have joined these schools have never received any formal educational prior to this. Coming from remote villages, this is a source of interest for the children, and helps to overcome the trauma of their loss, at least for a little while.   Photo of small children with notebook

CWS/NCA in collaboration with UNICEF has also established a tent school for children within the CWS/NCA Tent Village. The children presently residing in the tent village have shown a keen interest in the school. Books, bags and pens are provided to the children there. UNICEF is discussing with the authorities whether they can provide the children with high energy biscuits during school timings. This would help reduce the chances of malnutrition among them.

CWS/NCA with its partner UNICEF is also setting up a child friendly area in the tent village for games and recreation. This would be utilized only under the supervision of a parent, to prevent the occurrence of any hazards.

CWS/NCA has also initiated a psychosocial care program with the women of the tent village. This program will help women cope with the trauma that they have faced and also help their children to get through this difficult time. As a part of the psychosocial care program CWS/NCA has also aired radio adverts. They inform the listeners about what earthquakes are and what to do when they occur, how to support children through the trauma of witnessing such a disaster, and how to find courage oneself to get through such a difficult time. These adverts have being aired in Islamabad and Abbottbad and are still on-air in Muzzaffarabad and Bagh.

CWS/NCA has also held various meetings with the teachers of the school in the tent village. The teachers have been pointing out that it is extremely difficult for the children to recover from the trauma, even as they meet other children and make new friends. It would be very hard to say that the children who witnessed the devastation would be able to recover   Photo of children writing
in a short span of time, but the hope that is seen in their eyes and the willingness to move on is admirable. As the first ray of sun is seen on the horizon these children get up and rush for school. The children also want to forget the tragedy and we have to help them. CWS/NCA is in the continuous process of identifying and helping such suffering children and providing them with maximum facilities.
