Famed sociologist contributed to development of liberation theology
Orlando Fals Borda — a seminal Colombian sociologist who contributed mightily to the development of liberation theology in Latin America — died Aug. 12 in the city of Bogotá, Colombia. He was 83.

Born in Barranquilla, Fals Borda grew up in First Presbyterian Church of that city. He graduated from the Presbyterian Colegio Americano (high school) in Barranquilla, before coming to the United States where he earned bachelor’s degree from the PC(USA)-related University of Dubuque, a master’s degree from the University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. from the University of Florida.
