| Compañeros en Misión is one of six mission stations of the Presbyterian Border Ministry (PBM), which is a joint mission of the PC(USA) and the National Presbyterian Church of Mexico. PBM has ministries of evangelism, new church development, community health and development, and mission education.
Liz began her service with Compañeros en Misión during her year of service as a Young Adult Volunteer in 2006 and 2007, when she filled in as interim coordinator. According to Liz, it was that experience that confirmed the call that she had begun to feel when she participated in mission trips to the U.S.-Mexico border while in college.
“It’s clear to me,” writes Liz, “that my experiences in Mexico have led me to this work. I have learned far more from the people there than I have ever given. It is amazing to see people so full of God’s love when their living situation seems to be pretty bleak. But the Mexicans don’t see it as bleak. They are living with God’s love, and that makes them happy. This is incredibly inspiring to me because I feel it’s so easy to get caught up in the pursuit of material wealth. I only hope that some day I can achieve the kind of faith in God that so many of the Mexicans I know possess.”
Liz is a graduate of the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas, from which she holds a B.S. in elementary education.
Her home church is First Presbyterian Church of Iola, Kansas, where she was ordained to the ministry of deacon in 1999. She now attends a mission congregation of the National Presbyterian Church of Mexico in Nogales, Sonora.
