Long-term mission volunteer Vicki Smith was appointed to a two-year
term in January 2007 to serve with the United Church in Jamaica
and the Cayman Islands. She teaches music and art to children ages 3 to
12 at Iona Preparatory School in Tower Isle, Jamaica.
The United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands is the result
of unions in 1965 and 1992 between the Presbyterian, Congregational,
and Disciples of Christ churches in Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.
The UCJCI has more than 200 congregations and 15 elementary and
secondary schools.
Vicki was well prepared for her work in Jamaica both by education
and experience. Prior to discerning her call to ministry in Jamaica,
Vicki worked for more than 24 years as teacher of music, history,
and a variety of other subjects in Pasadena, Texas.
“When I was 4 years old,”
writes Vicki, “I told my mother, ‘When I grow up I’m
going to be a teacher.’ From that moment on, I focused on
becoming an educator. But I also felt a call at an early age to
obey the Great Commission (Matthew 28: 19-20). I am humbled and
honored to be appointed by the PC(USA) to serve God’s children
in Jamaica. It’s a dream come true.” |
